8/25Arrival of Portuguese and Tanegashima Tokitaka's acquisition of firearms
A Chinese vessel carrying Portuguese drifted ashore at Mensura Cape on the southern tip of Tanegashima, and the island's lord, Tanegashima Tokitaka, purchased firearms. This marked the beginning of the introduction of firearms to Japan.

In place of Shimazu Yoshihiro, who had fought for the Western Army at Sekigahara, his successor Shimazu Tadatsune (Iehisa) worked to repair relations with Tokugawa Ieyasu. In Keichō 7, Ieyasu formally recognized Shimazu control over Satsuma, Ōsumi, and territories in Hyūga Province.
