   Xavier receives official permission to preach in Yamaguchi

   Xavier obtained Japan's first official permission to preach from Ōuchi Yoshitaka. Using the abandoned temple of Daidōji as a base, he began his activities in Yamaguchi.

   Month 10Beginning of the Mōri Campaign in Suō and Nagato

   After defeating Sue Harukata at Itsukushima, Mōri Motonari began a major invasion of the Ōuchi territories in Suō and Nagato. The campaign continued until 1557 and led to the fall of the Ōuchi and Mōri control of the two provinces.

   Mōri Motonari wrote and presented a fourteen-article letter of instruction to his three sons—eldest Takamatsu, second Motoharu, and third Takataka. The document emphasized the unity of the three brothers.
