Satake Yoshishige

Head of the Satake clan of Hitachi, known by the epithet "Demon Yoshishige." In 1562, at age 16, he succeeded his father Yoshiaki and became the sole leader after Yoshiaki's death in 1565. He built a coalition with the Utsunomiya, Yūki, and Nasu clans to counter the Later Hōjō clan's expansion into northern Kanto. At the 1584 Battle of Numajiri, he faced the main forces of Hōjō Ujimasa and Ujinao for approximately three months, halting their advance. He also contested power in southern Mutsu against Date Masamune, driving Masamune into a corner at the 1585 Battle of Hitotorigane and placing his second son Yoshihiro as an adopted heir into the Ashina clan. However, he lost influence over Aizu after his defeat to Masamune at the 1589 Battle of Suriagehara. At the 1590 Siege of Odawara, he participated alongside his son Yoshinobu and had his lands in Hitachi and Shimōtsuke confirmed, with Yoshinobu subsequently advancing the unification of Hitachi based on the dominance Yoshishige had established.
