Background
When Mōri Motonari's elder brother Okimoto died in 1516 and his young nephew Komatsu became Mōri family heir, Motonari became regent. In 1517, Takeda Mototsugu, the Aki Takeda clan chief aligned with the Amago, attacked Arita Castle, which was under Kikkawa control.
Outcome
Motonari departed as regent and fought against the combined Takeda-Kikkawa forces at Arita Castle and along the Mataigawa (Nakaido). Mototsugu was killed while attempting to cross the Mataigawa River, and the Mōri-Kikkawa forces won the victory. The details of the crossing and exchange of arrows and other combat details are not definitively determined due to conflicting accounts.
