Saitō Dōsan

斎藤道三

birth year unknown – 1556

Lord of Mino Province. In 1554 (Tenbun 23), he ceded headship to his son Yoshitatsu and retired to Sagiyama Castle, but conflicts arose when he favored Yoshitatsu's younger brother. In 1556 (Hōji 2), he was defeated and killed by Yoshitatsu at the Nagaragawa River. His son-in-law Oda Nobunaga attempted to send reinforcements but arrived too late and withdrew to Owari under pursuit. After his remains were initially buried near Sōfuku-ji Temple, they were moved to the present-day Dōsan Mound (Gifu) by the chief priest of Jōzai-ji Temple in 1837 (Tenpō 8).
