Reconstruction began on the main keep palace of Sunpu Castle, which had burned down in a fire the previous year, and the rebuilding was completed by August. As the seat of the retired shogun Ieyasu's government, Sunpu flourished to a degree rivaling Edo itself, and Ieyasu continued to wield enormous influence over both diplomacy and domestic affairs from this base.
